Valeriana Officinalis

A perrenial flowering herb with powerful benefits

Valerian root is a strong medicinal that has been used for at least 2000 years. Today we know Valerian root as a wonderful ally for the treatment of insomnia, anxiety and nervousness, and it is widely used in many countries as a replacement for harsh chemical medications for it’s gentleness, when used properly.

Although here in the US, there are many “regulations” and references to “not enough studies” etcetera, we, as herbalists, have been studying for many years to know the effects of herbs, and encourage you to do your own research.

Don’t be fooled by her sweet, sugary bloom

Her feet (roots) have a stink that many refer to as old gym socks. While others, like myself, do not mind the odor and find it rather earthy, others may find it quite repulsive.

Valerian has a rich history with Magick and folklore. The ancient Greeks would gather bundles of Valerian and hang them around their homes to keep evil spirits at bay. Other people claimed that throwing Valerian toward an arguing couple, would cause them to cease immediately. Valerian was sewn into sleep pillows and used in love potions and it was said that when a woman wore Valerian, that men would “follow like children”. Then there is the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, Germany who played his flute and lead the rats out of town. People say that he must have worn or carried Valerian in his pockets, as rats love the smell, and this would have lured them to follow him.

We believe that all history has relevance and that it is best to study, learn and get to know…
